Main Street Hagerstown is a place that fosters opportunities for growth, offers residents a safe and authentic lifestyle, and encourages our entrepreneurial spirit and creative expression. The City of Hagerstown has been a designated Maryland Main Street community since October 2014. It is a volunteer effort by citizens, businesses, organizations and government to revitalize downtown Hagerstown by diversifying and expanding businesses and cultural opportunities while maintaining its historic integrity and value.
Main Street Maryland is a comprehensive downtown revitalization program created by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). The program strengthens the economic potential of Maryland’s traditional main streets and neighborhoods. Using a competitive process, Main Street Maryland selects communities, which have made a commitment to revitalization, and helps them increase private-sector small business investment, and improve the appearance and image of their core business districts.
To accomplish Main Street goals, DHCD has partnered with the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s National Main Street Center, which developed the Main Street Four Point Approach for commercial revitalization.
The volunteer committees are listed below:
Design Group: Enhances the physical appearance of the commercial district by creating an inviting environment for shoppers, businesses, and visitors. The committee focuses on the visual appearance of streetscapes and storefronts and paints a picture of economic potential.
Organization Group: Builds consensus and cooperation in the community by relationship-building. Through work with volunteers, communication with the public, and development of support, this group creates a solid foundation upon which revitalization can take hold.
Promotion Group: Creates the positive image that will foster community pride and build consumer confidence in the commercial district by planning and executing special events and marketing campaigns.
Business Relations Group: Strengthens the district’s existing economic base while finding ways to expand it to meet new opportunities and challenges from outlying development and the needs of today’s consumers.
Clean, Safe & Green Group: Makes the district a cleaner, greener, and safer place to live, work and play through street enhancements and engaging with police to promote safer neighborhoods and business districts.
