Purpose statement: Enhancing the perception of a community through the principles of Smart Growth and sustainability. The Main Street community should be a clean and safe commercial and residential district through strategies such as expanding parks and playgrounds, implementing commercial recycling programs, and promoting energy and water efficient building improvements.
The Clean, Safe and Green Workgroup has been working with the City of Hagerstown to install additional trash and recycle cans. In addition the group has been working with city code enforcement to create and enhance the enforcement of city code to insure that neighborhoods are litter and trash free. In addition to working with the City to develop stricter rules for the handling of trash and trash cans, the group has held several community clean up and plantings over the last several months as have the Neighborhoods First communities in many neighborhoods.
Future projects include working with the Hagerstown police Department to develop a safety plan for enhanced and energy efficient lighting, benches, and plantings to make the City Center safer and more inviting for citizens and visitors. In addition a community garden is being considered as a way to engage the community and promote healthy living.
The Clean, Safe, and Green workgroup is always looking for volunteers that are interested in working with us to enhance the look and feel of the City Center and surrounding neighborhoods. Please contact Amanda Whitmore at AWhitmore@hagerstownmd.org if you are interested in volunteering. Meetings are held once a month and this is a great way to get involved and make a difference.
